As the “Wildflower Capital” of Colorado, the warmer months provide endless activities, all with breathtaking scenery as the backdrop. Visitors can choose from recreational activities such as hiking, climbing, mountain biking, boating, whitewater rafting, kayaking, fly-fishing and horseback riding.
CB MacTrout, LLC: CB Mactrout offers guided fly fishing excursions on the Gunnison, East and Taylor Rivers and their tributariesThese excursions can be full day, half day or customized for one or more anglers. CB MacTrout has access to many miles of the top private water in the area.
Irwin Colorado: Walk, wade or float down a river while a guide rows you and lines you up with deep holes only accessible by river. Half day or full day trips are available and no prior experience is required. This outfitter uses the most experienced guides who have great local knowledge. They will not only take you to the hottest spots but provide great instruction while teaching you the finer points of fishing these gold medal streams.
The Club at Crested Butte: Our Robert Trent Jones Jr. course is known for its meticulously maintained championship-quality fairways and greens. Its five sets of tees assure a challenging round for golfers of all levels. The course sprawls over 160 acres among a tranquil setting of trout-filled lakes, groves of aspen, and pristine wilderness, while spectacular views of the Elk Mountain Range greet players at every point on the course.
The hiking is limitless in Crested Butte and many trails are accessible from the front door of the Purple Mountain Bed & Breakfast. Knowledge of the trails is our specialty. We make a point of answering questions and providing information on the endless trails in our area each morning to get our guests’ day planned. Below is a list of some of our most infamous trails.

- Lower Loop Trail - Easy, ADA accessible for 1 mile - 2.5 miles
- Crested Butte/Mt. Crested Butte Recreation Path - Easy - 2.75 miles (2 miles are ADA accessible)
- Green Lake Trail - Moderate - 4 miles
- West Maroon Pass (Crested Butte to Aspen) - Moderate - 24 miles RT
The Crested Butte area has some of the best mountain biking in the country with many believing that the sport was founded in our fabulous little town. Regardless of taking a long, epic ride or a short ride geared for a beginner, all bikers have access to the incredible mountain scenery.
Crested Butte Mountain Guides: Crested Butte Mountain Guides specialize in personal, professional, and customized guiding and instruction in backcountry skiing, rock climbing, avalanche education, mountaineering, mountain biking, hut trips, sea kayaking, ice climbing, and hiking. They are the only fully permitted year-round guide service in the Gunnison Valley.
Irwin Colorado: Irwin offers many different options geared to suit all levels from beginner to advanced. Beginners can try a 1-2 hour session of climbing on their in-town climbing wall. Go for a half-day climbing trip and learn the basics of climbing while ascending beautiful granite walls of varying difficulty. If you are experienced or adventurous, try a multi-pitch rock climb in the famous black Canyon or try Alpine climbing on the aesthetic guide ridge on Mt. Crested Butte.

Irwin Colorado: The Taylor River is the classic go-to for whitewater with plentiful class 2 & 3 whitewater. A 2-3 hour trip gets you the most whitewater while a full-day trip includes a gourmet lunch on the river's bank, and you can see most of the Taylor River. The Gunnison River offers a great scenic float with a couple of exciting splashes through the Whitewater Park. If you want to test your skills in a personal craft you can try a duckie or inflatable kayak or take a multi-day kayak lesson and learn the basics of becoming a whitewater kayaker like the Eskimo roll and the eddy turn.
Scenic River Tours: Scenic River Tours offers rafting trips around Western Colorado on the Colorado, Taylor, Lake Fork, Rio Grande and Gunnison River. Depending on your skill level, they offer a full variety of raft trips to choose from on several rivers in the Gunnison, Crested Butte, Lake City and Telluride Areas.
Three Rivers Outfitting: Based out of the general store at Three Rivers Resort, Three Rivers Outfitting has been offering guided rafting, fishing and kayaking trips since 1984. Most of our trips originate from our full-service Paddle and Fly shops. Rafting and kayaking trips are available for nearly every age and ability from easy Class II floaters to raging Class IV waters.
